What to Know about Teaching English in China

Employment Requirements

  • Education

    A minimum university bachelor degree is required to teach English in China.

  • TEFL Certification

    TEFL Certification is required. A minimum of 120-hour TEFL certification is recommended.

  • Citizenship Requirements

    Most employers require citizens of USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa to legally teach English in China. Citizens of other countries who are fluent English speakers, satisfy the educational requirements and have a TEFL certification may also find jobs.

Contract Hours and Terms

  • Types of Jobs

    Mainly public schools, universities and private language schools

  • Teaching Hours

    20-30 teaching hours and lesson preparation time, depending on type of employer

  • Vacation

    Language Schools: Two weeks paid vacation, public holidays (~ 1 month)
    Public schools and Universities: Public holidays, winter and summer holidays (~ 3 months)

  • Contract Period

    Most contracts are for 10-12 months, depending on type of employer
